In this case the writer has mistaken pestilence (a usually fatal epidemic) for petulence (a bad temper or peevishness) you can't put others through pestilence... it's a disease.

Why They're Inappropriate:
Someone commented: 'In this case the writer has mistaken pestilence (a usually fatal epidemic) for petulence (a bad temper or peevishness) you can't put others through pestilence... it's a disease.' Actually, it IS a reference to 'pestilence'. The pestilence (or the disease) is the effect (or punishment that is endured) for the cause: what has been done to others. The song isn't saying that the recipient of the pestilence has put others through pestilence, but that he is receiving pestilence because of what he's put others through.
