Parody Song Title:

"They're Not Jokesome at Night"

Parody Written by:

John A. Barry

The Lyrics

They're not jokesome at night
'cause of the writers' strike.
I'm so sorry they drifted apart--
That's the writers, who bray
And producers who won't pay
When net denizens download their art.

So beware that the parlance is sketchy and spare.
Unlike with Dave and others, no sketch-scribblers there.
Each side's partly to blame,
And it's clearly a shame
Jon and Colbert aren't jokesome tonight.

Spoken:
No wonder they're not jokesome tonight.
You know, someone wrote that the world's a stage--
I stress the WRITING part.
Without writers, most of the bits don't sound too smart.
Acting as if he frets, Jon/Steve starts to look askance.
They once read lines so cleverly and never missed a cue.
That was back two months, then change;
The shows are now strange.
And why? Everyone knows.
Funny they're trying to be, but clumsy
Are the strained guffaws that ensue.
I just cannot go on hearing these guys
If they keep winging as they do.
The stages, still there, but the shtick is spare.
Wit emptiness abounds.
If writers don't come back quickly,
Might as well bring the curtain down.

I am feeling the pain;
Won't scribes come back again?
I will cheer when Jon's/Steve's jokesome at night.

I'd give you a witty comment to explain my five-vote, but my writers are on strike, too. Their demands? More parodies about the Mets and a new "Wreck."

I'll sing your praises (to the same tune you target here): "John A. Barry’s alright / He can carry the fight / ‘Gainst the feeble ad-libbing of wags. / Jon &Steve, my advice: / Hire Barry to spice / Up your shows with some classier gags." And so on. :-)

As a true telephobe, I'd say the writer's strike was the best thing to happen to TV, since well, since they invented TV... :-P
