Song Parodies -> Alan Johnson
| Original Song Title: | "George Murphy" |
| Original Performer: | Tom Lehrer |
| Parody Song Title: | "Alan Johnson" |
| Parody Written by: | Phil Alexander |
Another one on the current brouhaha between scientists and their political, er, "masters". If you don't know the OS, it's here (one of a very few Lehrer songs that hasn't dated very well... even if he does get a laugh at the thought of a young Ronald Reagan going into politics.. )
Governments often try to mix
Science with their politics
From vaccination
To constipation?
But Alan Johnson's the Home Sec
Who's done the most to wreck
Advice, oh s**t
'Cause now we've a Home Secretary whose head's stuck right up his arse
We can't expect our child-r-en to understand the truth
Unless we tell them bollocks that'll contradict the proof
The rubbish that they spew
'Bout what drugs'll do to you
Show his feeble grasp of science at a glance.
Should ecstasy stay as Class A? Al: of course
Even if it's safe as falling off a horse
And although it's barely harmful, he's not gonna
Liberalize mar-ij-u-wanna
Think of all the chemicals you've yet to try
You know they're gonna ban them if they get you high
Who cares about the evidence that science may advance
They'll show the public a "moral" stance!

Odd-- I heard something on this very subject just today. Seems to be a timely topic everywhere! Nice match to OS... and a fitting choice, with vaudevillian melody/rhythms, etc. :D
I don't think it's a coincidence that you heard something on this topic today - it's all over the news over here, has been for a week or more. Thanks - it's a song I've been thinking of parodying for ages, but never really had the subject material.
First, great parody. Second, I remember Tom Lehrer's George Murphy...well done. Turd (no pun intended!), your Home Sec sounds bloody awful! ;)
