The Lyrics

To the Am I Right community,

It is with deep regret that I pass on this news. I've been informed that earlier this month, long time Am I Right great, 'Tommy Turtle', died following a protracted struggle with cancer. His real name was Steve Victor and he hailed from Florida where he helmed a mortgage company, no doubt with great aplomb. I had communicated with 'Tommy' intermittently over the past 4 or 5 years and considered him a true Renaissance man—not only a lyrical wizard but a mathematical genius—a contentious, libidinous polymath with a heart of gold. Though occasionally persnickety, he was always funny and genuinely compassionate. I considered him a mentor during my time at this site and was constantly amazed at the depth and breadth of his knowledge—and that preternatural quickness of his was a thing to behold! While Tommy didn't suffer fools gladly, he apparently made an exception in my case, and for that I'll always be grateful. Though he hadn't frequented this site recently, he left a truly impressive legacy including hundreds of hilarious-n-erudite parodies, many memorable collaborations and, of course, his trademark 'foot-long footnotes'. If you're unfamiliar with his work, take a gander at his oeuvre (http://www.amiright.com/parody/authors/tommyturtle.shtml) and I think you'll agree. He will be sorely missed.

Yours,

TJC
This is a tribute to 'TT' I'd written years ago, but find it just as apt today

Crave—
A satirist's sly inuendo?
Or an ironist's riff that's extendo-?
Or a screen writer's twist that's transcendo-?
Well The Turtle does *all that* in song!

Sure—
The Improv may 'giggle' the boozy
And 'The Onion' may niggle a newsie
But for lyrical lambaste the choosy
Turn to Turtle for spoofs in a song!
hOlé!

There are comics a' carping in Cambridge
There are mockers amok in Montreau
But right *here's* a 'Right' writer
Incitin' insighter
Who's MIN-str-el psych'll must flow!

He won't quit!
He spoofs on!
It's a Tommy T. custom
To take tunes and bust'em
By clubbing his subs thereupon!

Oh—
The reason Chuck G. has an ulcer
And must mainline IV AlkaSeltzer
Is the tunes that The Turtle belts out, sir
Tend ta' feature libidinous schlongs!
hOlé!

He's The Parodist Joie-Joie de 'V'-est
Who oVINEly opines from his shell
Such salacious sardonics
To classic symphonics
Alarmed are the sheep in their dell!

He won't stop!
He larks on!
It's Chelonian custom:
Lamb'poon ewes n' stchuup 'em
By thrusting in subs that go 'SPRONG!!'

If you're ever in need of a chortle
Don't ya bother with two leg'ed mortals
Grab your mouse and head straight for Chuck's portal
And quite soon be amused
When hilarity spews
From a shaggin' that's waggin' n' wrong
That's what Tommy T. does to a song!

hOlé!

~ Rest in Peace, Tommy. ~

Sad news :( Thank you for the tribute in parody: very apposite.

That's very sad news. I think Tommy was the most talented song parodist of all. One of the trickiest parodies to do is the "smoosh", where you imagine Band A doing the lyrics of of a song from band B using a melody from one of Band A's song. For example, I did a smoosh called "Baba O'Rigby", where the Who sings "Eleanor Rigby" using their song "Baba O'Riley" That's tricky even for a simple song ........ Tommy once smooshed "The Wreck of the Edmund FitzGerald" with "American Pie" and then came back the next day and did the reverse. That's the greatest feat of song parody I've ever seen -- with the possible exception of double smooshing "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" with "I am the Very Model of the Modern Major" General. Tommy managed to do that one just five days later

Yes, TJC. This is a huge loss. Your words express very well what Steve Victor has meant to the AmiRight community. Readers of this tribute might be interested in the Tommy Turtle thread on the MessageBoard, http://www.inthe00s.com/index.php?topic=49394.0

ChuckyG is trying to determine an appropriate way to commemorate Tommy Turtle.

Just got the news this morning. Tommy had told me a couple months ago that he was involved in taking care of someone close to him. I assumed at the time it was an elderly parent or other relative. He did not seek sympathy by letting me, or apparently anyone else on this site know that the one in trouble was he. Tommy, as I shall always remember him, was a mentor and an encouragement to me, and I am sure, to everyone who has been at amiright for a few years or more. It is amazing that this medium can bring us together with fine and talented people we would never otherwise meet in person. Hasta la vista, Tomas Tortuga!

The last communication I had with TT was his apology for not getting to edit a book I was writing. Never a word about his cancer. He will be missed, maybe more than he would have realized.

Damn, I'm gonna miss him. Never shy with an opinion and always had the documentation to back his stuff up. He could turn a phrase and rhyme into something special. I'll really miss the footnotes, the double-entendre, the advice, and the puns. I learned a lot from him, and he made me want to write gooder...
Truly a big loss, not just for the site, but I'm sure for his friends and family as well.
Damn again.

Thanks to WarrenB for letting me know about this. I'm not on the site anymore except on occasion. TT was one of the masters. Sad to hear of his passing. Part of his legacy lives on in the brilliant parodies he shared with us. RIP, TT.

TJC: A very fitting tribute, indeed. He was one of a kind. I will miss his encouragement, advice, humor, and, of course, his wickedly funny writing.

Wasn't aware of this, may he R.I.P. I enjoyed his works and things will never be the same without him.
