Song Parodies -> "K-Mart"

Original Song Title:

"Hey Ya"

Original Performer:

Outkast

Parody Song Title:

"K-Mart"

Parody Written by:

Ethan Mawyer

The Lyrics

the original just hit #1 on the billboard hot 100 chart this week, so maybe some people will be familiar with how it goes
I'd hate to go spend a lot
On designer clothes
In some expensive store
I'm not a penny pincher
I just have no need to
Waste lots of dough
I tried Salvation Army
While the cost was low
So was the quality
To meet my shopping needs
It seems that there is only
One good choice for me

K-Mart ... K-Mart
K-Mart ... K-Mart
K-Mart ... K-Mart
K-Mart ... K-Mart

You're acting snobby
Cause you have Armani
And Prada, yada yada
That's enough talk from you
You think you're better
With your polo sweater
But I am never terri-
Fied of spilling my food
If violent muggers lust for the expensive
It's more safe
Much more safe
Much more safe
Much more safe
To wear cheap jackets
It's truly foolish
To do what you do and
Spend lots on what is useless
When your mortgage still isn't paid

I just used a twenty
And I bought some pants

K-mart
K- mart
K- mart... I wanna keep my money
k-mart... Just wanna not look funny
k-mart... The shoes are not the greatest
k-mart ...At least they're not from Payless
k-mart... Almost empty pockets
k-mart... I can't buy a wallet

Hey I will ask ya
Ask you a question
Where else can you save this much cash?
(Geico!) Than can't be true
I said where can you save this much cash
(Geico!) no!
Stupid gecko with beady eyes
They spend so much to advertise
I can't afford a car to drive
Fifteen Percent's a lie... Now I have great news
I went and quit my bad job in the intersection
Since guarding the lives of kids pays like nothin'
Now I've got a job that I am really quite proud of
Attention shoppers, I'm your announcer!... you hear me now
Savings, savings, savings, (uh huh)
Savings savings, savings, savings, savings, savings (oh yeah)
Savings, savings, savings without beady eyed lizards, savings, savings (that's right)
There's no yellow faces, just savings, big savings, savings, lots of savings
Savings without beady eyed lizards

Attention shoppers, the store will close
At twelve or so, it's time to go
You've got to go
You can come back soon
Do... come back soon

K-Mart ... K-Mart
K-Mart ... K-Mart
K-Mart ... K-Mart
K-Mart ... K-Mart

Don't be too disappointed, EM, if this doesn't garner a lot of votes. Despite the fact that OutKast is beloved by both critics and record buyers (They're up for six Grammys, including Record of the Year for "Hey Ya!" - a song I love love love), it takes a while for songs to really become of a part of pop-culture consciousness. ("American Pie" had been around for THIRTY YEARS before Madonna covered it and Weird Al - and everyone else - parodied it.)

And what makes "Hey Ya!" so much fun is the groove (not to mention Andre 3000's amazing stage presence), as opposed to the superfluous lyrics (though "Shake it like a Polaroid picture" is great stuff).

Despite all that, though, your parody lyrics are top-drawer. "K-Mart" may well be the best possible sub for the words "hey ya," and "Savings without beady eyed lizards" is sweet. 555. Spaff out (finally).

I have to admit, the current songs I would know are almost all country. A girlfriend/wife will do that to a man. Nevertheless, your lyrics are good, and I've seen this guy on MTV.

OutKast is amazing...this is a great song, and I think there are a good number of people that know it

Wow! This could not have been easy to parody, especially near the end, and you did a great job!

You get 5s just for parodying the song, man.

Try it again with Target (or Wall-Mart) instead of K-Mart and sing about all the stuff you can buy there.

Well done, Ethan. I liked the "Prada, yada yada" line and the way you worked in the Geico gecko.

Ditto what I said in the last paragraph of my previous comment. Scrap the rest of it though - I was way off with that "pop-culture consciousness" prediction. "Hey Ya!" is already a classic, and very much part of the zeitgeist. The lyrics too.

What's cooler than being cool? Tone-Def!

I'm impressed. I had the same idea for a "K-Mart/Hey Ya" sub, but someone beat me to it. However, I'm not upset; you did a real good job with it. 555
