The Lyrics:

Why:
The continent of America is part of the word American in this song and title. "American Woman" was a #1 hit song for the Canadian group, the Guess Who in the first few months of 1970. With the vocals of lead singer Burton Cummings really selling this tune. It was a #1 tune the same week as the Kent State University, in Ohio, massacre on May 4, 1970 where students were protesting against President Nixon expanding the Vietnam War into Cambodia, and four students were shot by National Guardsmen. The "American Woman" being referenced by the Guess Who is the Statue of Liberty.
