Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> The Spinners

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

A One of a Kind Love Affair: The Anthology album at Amazon.com
The Spinners', "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love?"
The Misheard Lyrics:
And I wonder what it is I feel for you
The Real Lyrics:
And I wonder what 80 years I feel for you
The Story: The only thing I know is ever since I was a little kid that's what I thought I heard. So if someone been feeling so strange speaking their love interest's name for 80 years, shoot how old are they? - Submitted by: Carlton Piercey
The Spinners', "Games People Play"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Colt 45, get it for the subway home.
The Real Lyrics:
It's 12:45 Headed for the subway home.
The Story: I thought it was odd that the singer was suggesting that folks stop in to the licquor store and then proceed to drink in public. I could imagine a worker getting a head start on his weekend, bringing the paper bag, folded down, to his mouth in the air conditioned comfort of the subway train. Not a bad idea, if you are so-inclined. Hey, it beats drinking and driving! - Submitted by: Paul W.
The Spinners', "Games People Play"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I took my time
'Cause the fatso's all along
The Real Lyrics:
I took my time
'Cause I felt so all alone
The Story: I was only a kid & I thought he was talking about a fat person that came along & had to take his time, because they walk very slow. - Submitted by: Nick
The Spinners', "One of a Kind (Love Affair)"
The Misheard Lyrics:
One of a kind love affair
Makes you want to love her
You just got to f*** her, yeah
The Real Lyrics:
One of a kind love affair
Makes you want to love her
You just got to hug her, yeah
The Story: When the single was first released, there was some confusion as to whether the song contained a curse word in the section that immediately followed the instrumental break of the song. Supposedly, some heard the lyric Philippé Wynne sang like this: One of a kind love affair Makes you want to love her You just got to f*** her, yeah." However, there were others who heard the allegedly offensive line as "You just got to hug her, yeah". Regardless, Atlantic quickly responded to the complaints by reissuing the song with the three lines edited out and the "One of a kind love affair makes a lame man walk, makes a blind man talk about seeing again" lyric was moved up to right after the instrumental break. To add to the confusion, there are some lyrics web sites that have the line as "You just have to hurt her, yeah".[2] Over the years both the "censored" and the "uncensored" versions of the song have been used for the numerous CD appearances that "One of a Kind (Love Affair)" has made. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_of_a_Kind_%28Love_Affair%29 - Submitted by: David
