Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Styx

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Styx - Greatest Hits album at Amazon.com
Styx's, "Come Sail Away"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Feel so helpless like a baby in the sky
The Real Lyrics:
Feel so helpless like a boat against the tide
The Story: I sang 'like a baby in the sky' for months in the late 70s until my three older brothers heard me one day and laughed at me hysterically and corrected me. They still rib me about it when they get the chance. - Submitted by: Joy
Styx's, "Come Sail Away"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I'm sailing away
Set an open course full of urgency.
The Real Lyrics:
I'm sailing away
Set an open course for the virgin sea.
The Story: A high school buddy of mine was so convinced that this was the correct lyric that he would almost argue with anyone who suggested otherwise. - Submitted by: Ed Williams
Styx's, "Come Sail Away"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Kumselah-weh!
The Real Lyrics:
Come sail away.
The Story: I thought it was about some African guy. Shrug. - Submitted by: maria
Styx's, "Come Sail Away"
The Misheard Lyrics:
On board, I'm the captain
Sublime award!
The Real Lyrics:
On board, I'm the captain
So climb aboard.
The Story: In high school, a friend of mine gave me a copy of the live version of this song. For years, I thought these were the lyrics. I thought the phrasing was so poetic. Though the studio version is pretty clear, I always sang along too loud to the radio to hear it. I finally heard it one day, and wondered how many people had heard my 'poetic' version. Listen to the live version some time. I swear I still hear it wrong sometimes! - Submitted by: Kira
Styx's, "Lady"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Touch me, and my trouble abade.
or
Touch me, and my troubles obeyed.
The Real Lyrics:
Touch me, and my troubles all fade.
The Story: My mom and I were listening to a Styx tape that I made in the car, and I'm singing along to 'Lady'. After this line, she goes, 'Ohhh... all fade! For the longest time I've been trying to figure that out for the longest time; I thought it was obeyed'. I had a good laugh out of that. - Submitted by: Wendy
Styx's, "Lights"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Illuminate me carry me away, marry me, marry me
The Real Lyrics:
Illuminate me giving me away, carry me, carry me
The Story: This wasn't misheard by me, rather, by an entire choir and the music transcriber. We were listening to this in class and at the end, a bunch of girls were 'why was he saying 'marry me'?' and made fun of it from then on. Me, being the resident Styx fan, corrected them, saying the correct lyrics, but they didn't care, really. Ended up correcting the music that we had too, because it was quite inaccurate (with 'you see the parade...' instead of 'you seem afraid'). Though in competition, the girls always sang 'carry me away' instead of 'giving me...'. But it was funny how misheard some of the lyrics were. - Submitted by: Froggie
Styx's, "Lorelei"
The Misheard Lyrics:
When that thing kabloralies,
my head turns all around.
The Real Lyrics:
When I think of Lorelei,
my head turns all around.
The Story: I was a fourth grader and loved the song. It was my first attempt to log some lyrics so I could feel cool singing along with the song. When my big brother found my notebook with the misheard lyric, he tried his best to correct the lyric without laughing, but it was too much. - Submitted by: Ric Wade
Styx's, "Mr Roboto"
The Misheard Lyrics:
He eats too much at a time
The Real Lyrics:
Himitsu wo shiri tai
The Story: I have this song on disk and my kids love it. However, I have taught them my incorrect version of this song. They in turn have been teaching their friends. The other day I heard a kid at school who I didn't even know singing 'he eats too much at a time'! - Submitted by: cindi maiers
Styx's, "Mr. Roboto"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Double all you got for Mr. Roboto.
The Real Lyrics:
Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto.
The Story: I always thought that Mr. Roboto was going into a bar and that he drank a lot (always double's). - Submitted by: Greg Dennler
Styx's, "Not Dead Yet"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Daddy's gonna get me but I'm not dead yet
The Real Lyrics:
Someday he's gonna get me but I'm not dead yet
The Story: I was listening to this song and trying to figure out the lyrics, and I heard this part and it just seemed to me that this guy's family was really out to get him, since I thought earlier he said something about his mother. Guess I was waaayy off. I feel kinda silly now. - Submitted by: Wendy
Styx's, "Sing for the Day"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Come to your window tonight and say goodbye to your dreams
The Real Lyrics:
Come to your window tonight and we'll fly to your dreams
The Story: I was listening to this song and thought Tommy Shaw said 'and wave goodbye to your dreams' and was thinking 'Oh he's real nice, telling that poor girl to forget all her dreams' then I realized the real lyrics a bit later, and then I thought he was nice for helping her follow them. Quite a bit different, huh? - Submitted by: Litestar
