Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Salt-N-Pepa

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Salt-N-Pepa album at Amazon.com
Salt-N-Pepa's, "Ain't Nuthin' But a She Thing"
The Misheard Lyrics:
It ain't a man's world (you go girl)
No more cigarette spice (and everything nice).
The Real Lyrics:
It ain't a man's world (you go girl)
No more sugar and spice (and everything nice).
The Story: I was in the car with a couple of friends, and one of my friends was singing this song to himself. When he got to this part, he sang 'cigarette spice'. I did a sort of double take, then corrected him. Everyone started laughing hysterically. He jokingly tried to defend his interpretation: 'Cigarette spice makes sense. They mix all sorts of herbs and spices with tobacco to make it taste good.' - Submitted by: bollweevil
Salt-N-Pepa's, "Push It"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Bullshit real good!
The Real Lyrics:
Push it real good!
The Story: I thought she actually said something profane, given the fact I heard it in an OnStar commercial some time back. - Submitted by: Cody Finke
Salt-N-Pepa's, "Push It"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Get out your d***!
The Real Lyrics:
Get up on this!
The Story: My little sister & I used to sing this song over & over & over when we were little. Once we were listening to MTV as we folded clothes with our mom & were singing along to this song when these lyrics came up. We stopped singing because we were afraid our mom would yell at us for using a bad word. Then her face changed because SHE misheard the lyric, too! - Submitted by: Niki
Salt-N-Pepa's, "Push It"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Get up on d*ck.
The Real Lyrics:
Get up on this.
The Story: When I first heard the song Push It by Salt-N-Pepa, I thought they were saying, "Get up on d*ck". My sister taught me, that they were saying, "Get up on this". - Submitted by: Josh Blaize
Salt-N-Pepa's, "Shoop"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Don't you know,
I wanna shoot Betty
The Real Lyrics:
Don't you know,
I wanna shoop, baby
The Story: While partying with a bunch of my friends, this song came on and we all started singing along. One guy was singing, 'Don't you know, I wanna shoot Betty.' We all stopped short and said, 'What did you just say?!' He repeated it, then sang his version of the chorus ('Shoot Betty, Shoot Betty, Shoot Betty, Betty, Betty,') instead of 'Shoop be doop, shoop be doop, shoop be doop be doop be doop.' We were all hysterically laughing and told him the actual words and he didn't believe us! To this day, I'm pretty sure if he heard the song he'd be singing Shoot Betty! - Submitted by: Amanda B.
