Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Police

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Every Breath You Take: The Classics album at Amazon.com
Police's, "Every Breath You Take"
The Misheard Lyrics:
How my poo hole aches
The Real Lyrics:
How my poor heart aches.
The Story: To this day, even though I know what the lyric is, I still can't get what I always hear out of my mind. Maybe it's his British accent that makes me think he says his "poo hole" aches. I mean, it's one of the most misinterpreted songs in all of history, and mine is one of many misheard lyrics out there. I will admit it didn't make sense to me when I heard it that way. - Submitted by: Annabelle

Police's, "King Of Pain"
The Misheard Lyrics:
That's my soda, Babe!
The Real Lyrics:
That's my soul up there!
The Story: I always wonder if Sting actually likes soda. I mean, to this day, I still hear it that way. How can you hear what he originally says when the recording is bathed in reverb? - Submitted by: Annabelle
Police's, "Spirits In The Material World"
The Misheard Lyrics:
My, my own, my own box of cereal
The Real Lyrics:
Spirits in the Material World
The Story: I had this tape when I was 17 and I let my Nephews listen to my tapes in my car. One day I took my 12 yr old nephew Ronnie with me somewhere and put this tape in, he started singing and I started laughing. He had to grow up sharing the cereal and milk with a sister and brother. I think this was his one and only wish! - Submitted by: Lisa Felicione
Police's, "Spirits In The Material World"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Upstairs, in the material world
The Real Lyrics:
Are spirits in the material world
The Story: I use to exercise to this song, and really belt out the incorrect lyrics. I read the lyrics one day-It still sounds like 'Upstairs', and not, 'Are spirits'. - Submitted by: Jack
