Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Kool And The Gang

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Kool And The Gang's, "Celebration"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Celebration time come on
let's celebrate
The Real Lyrics:
Celebrate good times,
come on let's celebrate
The Story: I always thought it was celebrate good times come on...but I heard a little kid at a baseball game singing celebration time and I thought maybe I was the idiot singing it wrong all these years. (It's seems to be the way it is sung at ball games - my son sings it the same way. ed) - Submitted by: Mommy
Kool And The Gang's, "Misled"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Someone's playing in the Garden
So enticing, should I take a bow?
The Real Lyrics:
Someone's playing in the garden
So enticing, should I take a bite?
The Story: I thought the garden referred to Madison Square Garden, which coincidentally I visited for the first time ever right when this song was out. Therefore, hearing the second line as "bow" made absolute perfect sense. - Submitted by: Rich Braham
Kool And The Gang's, "Tonight"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Party party! I wanna dance with you! (This is the night, you'll see the light)
Party party! I wanna dance! (This is the night, you'll see the light) * EVERYBODY WANG CHUNG TONIGHT! * OR Paul McCartney! I wanna dance with you! (This is the night, you'll see the light)
Paul McCartney! I wanna dance! (This is the night, you'll see the light) * PAUL SAW HER STANDING THERE, NOT YOU! * OR Money money! I wanna dance with you! (This is the night, you'll see the light)
Money money! I wanna chant! (This is the night, you'll see the light) * MONEY CHANGES EVERYTHING * OR Mony Mony! I wanna dance with you! (This is the night, you'll see the light)
Mony Mony! I wanna chant! (This is the night, you'll see the light) * DON'T DO THAT CHANT! THIS IS KOOL + THE GANG, NOT BILLY IDOL! *
The Real Lyrics:
Oh come on! I wanna dance with you! (This is the night, you'll see the light)
Oh come on! I wanna dance! (This is the night, you'll see the light)
The Story: This song implies a possible deflowering at a guy's 16th birthday but it really winds up with him at a party dancing with a girl. Kool + the Gang kinda fooled ya, didn't they? A great party funk record, with clever pseudo-innuendos but never raunchy. A critic in Rolling Stone mag once said that these guys lop off the "-KY" in "FUNKY" and what do you get? Here's some proof. - Submitted by: Get Down On It + Celebrate!
Kool And The Gang's, "Too Hot"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Gotta do the zanger
for the mess that we made
The Real Lyrics:
We gotta cool this anger
What a mess we made.
The Story: When I was seven, I though 'The Zanger' was some sort of pennance (my wife thought that was hilarious - Submitted by: gary phelps
Kool and the Gang's, "Fresh"
The Misheard Lyrics:
She's fresh (as a fish), a sardine
She's like a sardine to me
The Real Lyrics:
She's fresh (fresh), exciting
She's so exciting to me
The Story: This was another mis-hear from my kids. So many laughs :) - Submitted by: Benji
