Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Engelbert Humperdinck

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Engelbert Humperdinck - His Greatest Hits album at Amazon.com
Engelbert Humperdinck's, "Les Bicyclettes De Belsize"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Lady St. Claire de Versailles
The Real Lyrics:
Les bicyclettes de Belsize
The Story: I was so sure of the lyrics that when this song popped into my head today and I searched for it on Youtube to learn the song's name and play it, when "Les Bicyclettes De Belsize" showed up in the results I ignored it as "obviously" not the song I was searching for! Amazing the tricks our ears can play on us! - Submitted by: Eitan

Engelbert Humperdinck's, "Les Bicyclettes de Belsize"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Lady regrets her belt size.
or
Lady selects her belt size.
The Real Lyrics:
Les Bicyclettes de Belsize
The Story: I first heard this song before I had studied any French, and then I struggled with this line, as per the above misheard versions. Later, studying French made it easier to figure out the line, except for the word 'Belsize', of whose meaning I'm still clueless. It must not be a French name as the other French lyrics woule have one guessing, because in French it's last syllable would sound like 'Sieze', not like 'Size' as it's pronounced in the song. - Submitted by: Trina Lufkin
Engelbert Humperdinck's, "Love Is a Many Splendoured Thing"
The Misheard Lyrics:
And your fingers touched my sorta horny thing... how to say
The Real Lyrics:
And your fingers touched my silent heart and taught it... how to sing
The Story: That part of the song is always slightly unclear, and in Engelbert’s rendition it’s even slightly mumbled, I thought. So I thought it was about her fingers touching the singer’s down there, simple as that. I was very shocked though that an otherwise elegant romantic poetic song goes to such depths? Did he really sing that? And then the dawn of the Internet age, search the lyrics, ok so that’s what it was. - Submitted by: Kenny
