Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody.
For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.
This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.
Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not
by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see
misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and
misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie
That's Zamora.
When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie
That's amore.
The Story: A friend's mother used to sing this song. One day she drove through Zamora (small farming community off I-5 in CA) and thought the song was about the town. - Submitted by: Pudgy Benjamin
If I had it in my power
I would arrange for every girl to have a child.
If I had it in my power
I would arrange for every girl to have your charm.
The Story: I was a young girl and was absolutely scandelized by what I thought was a very wanton statement (especially for the '60s). But when I discussed it with a friend, she cracked up and told me the correct wording. - Submitted by: Raynetta Manees
Don't forget a small O.D.
or
Don't forget a small, low leek.
Don't forget a small moonbeam.
The Story: I definitely can't hear 'moonbeam' in this line, even though lyrics sites give that as the lyrics. Puzzling over the line a lot, I guessed a variety of things there, but never anything particularly close in sound to 'moonbeam'. - Submitted by: Ron N. O'Connor
The message you gave to me
The mem'ries you gave to me
The Story: When I first heard this song on the radio I was a little kid. Until I reached adulthood and bought my own copy of the record, I didn't realize that the backup singers' lyric was quite poetic and not so prosaic. - Submitted by: Doug Montgomery
Rudy, the red d***ed reindeer.
Rudy, the red beaked reindeer.
The Story: Not me personally, but in the area in which I live, the people made a huge stink because they thought Martin said 'red d***ed'. It's quite funny actually. - Submitted by: Birdski05
When the moon hits the sky
With a big piece of pie
Catch some more hay.
When the moon hits your eye
Like a big pizza pie
That's amore!
The Story: After my mother heard me singing this song, she broke out into the misheard version above. I laughed real big, and she asked me why I was laughing. I explained the real words to her. But she didn't find anything about it very funny. - Submitted by: Edyth Bowen
When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie
That's L'amore.
When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie
That's amore.
The Story: It wasn't me who misheard it. It was actually what I was taught by my singing teacher. - Submitted by: Sarah
When the moon hits your eye
Like a big piece o' pie
When the moon hits your eye
Like a big pizza pie
The Story: We didn't eat pizza. I probably had never even heard the word. So I 'heard' words that were familiar to me. After all, "pizza pie" does sound pretty close to "piece o' pie"! It was years before I realized what the words really were. - Submitted by: Del Owens
When the moon hits your eye
Like a big pizza pie
Add some ore egg.
When the moon hits your eye
Like a big pizza pie
That's amore.
The Story: I was about three years old and from that day to this, my mother still laughs about it. What three year old non Italian knows what 'amore' is after all? - Submitted by: Poppy
