Upbeat Songs With Depressing Lyrics, Martha & the Vandellas

Check out the index.

Martha & the Vandellas', "Nowhere To Run"
The Lyrics:
Nowhere to run, baby, nowhere to hide
Got nowhere to run to, baby, nowhere to hide
It's not love I'm running from
It's the heartbreak I know will come
Martha & the Vandellas were a Motown group that several top ten hits in the mid-1960's, led by lead singer Martha Reeves, but without the huge success of the Supremes. Most critics and audiences feel that Martha & her Vandellas were more earthy feel to their music than the Supremes, although as with "Nowhere To Run" they shared the Supremes songwriting trio of Holland/Dozier/Holland. "Nowhere To Run" was a top five hit for the group in the first half of 1965 and had a very uptempo dance beat, but the lyrics are quite depressing, or at least distressing if you think about them and read them, because Martha is doing nothing but running from love or the heartbreak that might come as with the first verse posted here by me. And later in the song it appears Martha feels the guy who is trying to win her love is nothing but a stalker, especially when she sings the lines about how everyplace she goes she sees him standing there.
