It would be quite impossible to hate anything sung by the angelic Karen Carpenter during the all-too-brief time that she graced this desperate Earth. Nonetheless, that cannot completely hide the fact that the lyrics she was given to work with were sometimes less than superb. In this case, not only is there only an approximate rhyme between "shape" and "gate"; it is also true that "I really missed the gate" is an awkward line. I know the line is somehow meant as a metaphor, but even at that it is a reaching and awkward metaphor. So here, the author of these lines settled for an awkward line in order to make not even an exact rhyme, but only an approximate rhyme.
