Alies Klar, Herr Kommissar?
In 1981, "Der Kommissar" was written and originally released in West Germany and in all German by German artist Falco (who in 1986 would have an English speaking hit with "Rock Me Amadeus"). The British band, After The Fire recorded it in 1982, mainly in all English -- with some changes in translation to make it a little more comprehensible to English speaking audiences. Shortly after the recording the four man band (dating back to the early 1970's), After The Fire, broke up, but CBS records still released their version of "Der Kommissar" and it became an international hit reaching to #1 in Britain and #5 in the U.S. charts. The song itself was probably good for the mindset of the times with the concerns (whether really valid or not) voiced by President Reagan and other conservatives over the Communist and spying from Communist operatives. But in actuality the song as written by Falco was originally written from a child's game that was played in Germany (and still is). The first three words of the song as performed by After The Fire, "Zwei drei vier" are two three four in English. And the repeated one more time during the chorus line of "Alies Klar, Her Kommissar?" is roughly translated into English as "Is that all clear, Mr. Commissioner?" After The Fire would reform, later, after the song was a hit.
