After the Clash played the famous 1983 US festival the band suffered internal turmoil resulting in major lineup changes made mostly by their manager Bernie Rhodes. In 1984-86 this 'second generation' Clash toured and recorded the final Clash studio album 'Cut The Crap, released in 1985. Strummer went to Spain to chill. In the meantime the "This Is England" single was released. Joe said, "CBS had paid an advance for it so they had to put it out. I just went, 'Well fuck this', and fucked off to the mountains of Spain to sit sobbing under a palm tree, while Bernie had to deliver a record." In early 1986 the Clash disbanded. Joe Strummer has disavowed the 'second generation' Clash, saying 'It was a total fuck-up'.
