Song Parodies -> Sixteen Units

Original Song Title:

"Sixteen Tons"

Original Performer:

Merle Travis

Parody Song Title:

"Sixteen Units"

Parody Written by:

Tim Mayfield

Working full-time while taking 16 units as a music major is INSANE!!! Don't do it! 6 hours of class + 8 hours of work + 3 hours of music practice = 16 hours without calculating sleep, eating, commute time or studying time. If you don't eat, commute or study, it is possible to get about 7 hours of sleep a day...
Some people think a student is made out of cash
A good student is the one who surely will pass
Well, you're working all night
Just to pay off your loan
With a back that's weak and a mind that's strong

You take sixteen units, what do you get?
A little bit smarter, and deeper in debt
Mr. Dean, don't you call me,
Cause you know I can't go
My schedule's tied up
Until a quarter to four!

If you see me running better step aside
'Cause if you don't we will surely collide
I won't go around, I'll only go straight
I'm trying to get to class, before I am late

You take sixteen units, what do you get?
A little bit smarter, and deeper in debt
Hey Professor, don't you call me,
Cause you know I can't go
I've got to make more money
If my mind is to grow!

When you see me coming better step aside
A lot of gals didn't, a lot of gals cried
Got my wallet in my right hand, my left's got my books
I'm looking for a girl with both brains and good looks

You take sixteen units, what do you get?
A little bit smarter, and deeper in debt
Mr. Bossman, don't you call me,
Cause you know I can't go
I'm getting three hours of sleep
I just can't work no more!

What a coincidence you should write a parody written by Merle Travis. He just passed away. I believe Tennessee Ernie Ford had the big hit with the song, but Merle wrote it and he was quite the gifted songwriter. Good parody!

Thanks norman the k, but Merle Travis died in 1983.

On October 17, 1991, thirty-six years to the day after the release of "Sixteen Tons", Ernie Ford passed away.

Country music mainstay Merle Kilgore, who managed Hank Williams Jr. and co-wrote the hit tune "Ring of Fire" with one-time client June Carter Cash, died in Nashville on Sunday, February 6, 2005, of congestive heart failure related to his treatment for cancer, his publicist said. He was 70. Wrong Merle...

I don't know what I was THINKING! I am so sorry for the misinformation. Tim, and DMG cop, you are absolutely right. You know, I always prided myself on knowing a lot about traditional country music, and BOTH Travis and Kilgore were excellent country songwriters. I guess I was just a little taken aback about the death of Kilgore that I saw the name "Merle" and was confused. Believe it or not, I DID know that Merle TRAVIS wrote this song and that Merle KILGORE was the one who just passed. Please forgive my stupidity, but it was in a "senior moment" that I wrote that comment! Sorry!!!
