The Lyrics

While Todd in the Shadows did an excellent critique of this sappy Bette Midler song in his review, I'd like to add that on further analysis, it's even worse than he makes it out to be. What foolish admirers of this song most likely find so comforting and uplifting about this Deistic nonsense is that it's basically offering a false reassurance that God only cares about the evil we do if it's visible from a long way off. Needless to say, the kind of people who'd take comfort in that are the kind who've got a lot of evil to hide; in other words, "lawful evil" types looking for a religious loophole that will allow them to get away with everything they do, up to—and including—murder.
From right up close, the world is full of grief,
And of poverty and strife.
From right up close, glad songs bring no relief
To the people robbed of life.

From right up close, optimistic talk
Rings quite hollow on our ears.
Talk of peace brings war; talk of love, child rape;
Talk of hope confirms all our fears.

From right up close, no one has enough
Of what we truly need;
Because there's nothing—no wealth, no kinky stuff—
That sates our lust and greed.

From right up close, we are imbeciles!
It's only ourselves we've scammed
Trusting sweet nothings from celebrities—
All blind guides leading the damned.

God is watching us;
God has no blinders:
God's been watching us
From right up close.

From right up close, I know who's my friend,
And I see right through my foe.
From right up close, it's easy to comprehend
Who brought on us all this woe.

From right up close, Midler's awful song
Says God's too far off to care.
If you listen closely, it's really creepy:
It's a message of despair. (So hopeless!)

It's a song for dopes, siren song for fools:
Trust in her song, and you'll be damned;

'Cause God is watching us,
God is not far off,
God sees all our sins
From right up close.

No, God is not distant;
God's been watching...
God is not far off:
He's right up close.
Truth: it may not be very comforting, but on the whole, it's better for you.
