Song Parodies -> We Built This Country
| Original Song Title: | "We Built This City" |
| Original Performer: | Starship |
| Parody Song Title: | "We Built This Country" |
| Parody Written by: | Michael Pacholek |
If you thought my Thomas Jefferson entry for P3: The Presidential Parody Project was going to include a salacious reference to Sally Hemings, don't bet your last nickel on it. This is also a parody of what VH1 decided was "The Most Awesomely Bad Song... Ever!" No, this song is not "awesomely bad." But the video sure is.
We built this country!
We built this country on equal rights!
Built this country!
We built this country on equal rights!
Say you don't know me, or recognize my face?
Nickels in people's pockets all over the place!
Back in Philadelphia, handed me the task.
Franklin, Hancock and Adams only had to ask!
King George has lost his marbles!
Lanterns, two shine in the night!
Don't you remember?
We built this country!
We built this country on equal rights!
We built this country!
We built this country on equal rights!
Built this country!
We built this country on equal rights!
Someone's always playing revolution games.
Madison thinks it's our turn, I agree now, James.
We just want to govern, on the people's stage.
To them we are responsible, write history's page!
Napoleon writes a number.
Big land comes into our sights.
Don't you remember?
We built this country!
We built this country on equal rights!
We built this country!
We built this country on equal rights!
Built this country!
We built this country on equal rights!
Not just another country in this tired old world.
On the shores of Tripoli we have our flag unfurled!
Who counts the money, Lewis or did Clark?
Bringing back the specimens of critters, fruits and bark.
Don't ever forget us, future needs no fools.
Looking for America, attention paid in schools!
(We hold these truths to be self-evident: That all men are created equal.
That they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights.
That among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.)
Don't you remember? Remember?
(That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men,
deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.)
Head back to Monticello
under sweet Virginia's nights.
Don't you remember?
We built this country!
We built this country on equal rights!
We built this country!
We built this country on equal rights!
Built this country!
We built this country on equal rights!
(We built, we built this country!)
(We built, we built this country!)
(We built, we built this country!)
(We built, we built this country!)
(repeat 'til fade)
We built this country on equal rights!

OK, maybe "sweet Virginia nights" could be interpreted the wrong way...

Under the circumstances "Head back to Monticello" could be misinterpreted, too ;-) This is great, MP.
I loved this! And I LOVE the original song. And VH1 is totally in for a rumble now...bastards. (5s, Michael!)
3 Jefferson nickels.
Here's three more nickels in *your* pocket--this is very well paced, covers lots of historical facts, and paints a reasonably good picture of what Jefferson would be thinking in our own day.
Nice job!
Well done and informative. Loved the original too 5 5 5
Pacholek for President!
