The Lyrics

Here's the original video, so you can "sing along": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgKvtb_gq5E
(instrumental opening)

Remember when this stuff was new
and films were all in black and white?
It means you're old, and Dad sits there
without any pants, an awful sight.
Sitting in this DeSoto.
Why not a good car, I don't know.
Lawyer wears expensive shoes
but did he zip his fly?

Oh, find my way through nasty bush.
Entendre doubled-up.
Henley is a crude voyeur.
Through screen door, looks, that schlub.

He can lay his hands all over her.
On places no hands ever were.
Offer up some soft-core porn.
This is the end...
Because of con... dom...
that he's never worn.

Oh, wonderful were drive-in flicks.
But now those screens are demolished.
They put up posters of Ronnie boy
'cause this tired old land became masochist.
Flag hung up at stock exchange
and from poor to rich, income rearranged.
Ollie North on old Philco
Don't drink that water, man.

Don't make her pick cotton once again.
Redneck's ticker tape.
A picnic in nineteen-fifty-six.
Henley's face dust does scrape.

You can go report to face the draft.
Shave your hair, give you the shaft.
Johnny go and get your gun.
You will look good...
buried in your... nice dress uniform.

(instrumental break)

Don stands in front of power lines.
Looks like Ozzy in those shades sometimes.
But somewhere back there in this piece
is a ghost town waiting for release.
Couple married, love is true.
I wonder if, then, they "had to."
Creepy view from that window:
See car of JFK?

You can watch as Don goes on to brood.
I wonder if he's had bad food?
Football players celebrate.
Man with cigar...
Bum walks down street, more to complicate.

(instrumental fadeout)
And don't hitch-hike, and definitely don't pick up hitch-hikers. Not even if it's Don Henley.

Strange, but compelling. Sort of like "American Pie" or "End of the Innocence". I've always liked those songs I can't quite understand, as long as the melody is good. You conjure up some old memories with this one, not only as things "were", but how they "felt".
