The Lyrics

Whenever people start oozing pacifism and moral equivalence while condemning people for justly punishing tyrants and rapists and bloody murderers, I always feel like saying "My firm belief is that violence solves all kinds of problems. Now, hold still while I smack some sense into you!"
People are evil, so why don't you see
Why it is we get along so awfully?
People are evil, so why don't you see
Why it is we get along so awfully?

You show enemy colors
And you hate my belief;
You curse me; then you wonder
Why I give you such grief!
You scream and you berate me
And you say I'm all wrong
But you said we're all equal
In your dance and your song!

You should understand
What makes a man
Hate another man.
Don't you understand?

People are evil, so why don't you see
Why it is we get along so awfully?
People are evil, so why don't you see
Why it is we get along so awfully?

(Don't you understand?)
(Don't you understand?)
Don't you understand?

Now we're warring and we're killing,
And you say you don't see
Why we can't get along
And behave nicely.
You say there is no evil,
But there's something you've missed:
Your whole argument unravels,
When you're shaking your fist!
(Here's what you missed.)

You should understand
What makes a man
Hate another man.
Don't you understand?

People are evil, so why don't you see
Why it is we get along so awfully?
People are evil, so why don't you see
Why it is we get along so awfully?

You should understand
What makes a man
Hate another man.
Don't you understand?
[etc.]
Not that I accuse Depeche Mode of being so annoying in their song, but if their question is anything more than rhetorical, it does sound awfully naive.

DKTOS so no vote, only had one album that Had " Policy of Truth " on it. Agree that some people who are pacifistic and peaceful are often the same who like to go to prisons when someone is being executed to cheer on the murder of another. Or as you say condemn others for just acts of people who deserve it. In other words: two-faced or fence-sitters. If that isn't the message here, then correct me.

Not sure whether I understand your interpretation, but I was basically saying: people are inherently evil and self-serving, so it's silly to ask why we don't get along. Also: that we humans are inherently evil is self-evident, as demonstrated by how easily even the worst amoralists among us can perceive this evil in others. Since anger is a natural response to evil, an angry amoralist is self-refuting.
