The Lyrics

For those who haven't seen the story, an oil storage depot in Hemel Hempstead (about ten miles from where I am now) went boom in a big way on Sunday... news story here
There's an oil storage room
Yesterday went KABOOM!
And it's sending a cloud up to heaven
Cov'ring miles in a cloak
Of black, nox-ee-yus smoke
In a word, kinda like Armageddon

Oh oh oh oh oh oh
And it's sending a cloud up to heaven

When th'explosion occurred
It appears it was heard
Over most of the South-East of Britain
And the windows did shake
Tens of miles away
Many thousands of eardrums smitten

Oh oh oh oh oh oh
And it's sending a cloud up to heaven

There's a feeling I get
As I look to the West
And the pillar of smoke is still rising
And the sight that I see
Still makes me cry "**** me!"
After all, it *is* rather surprising

Oh oh oh oh oh oh
And it's sending a cloud up to heaven

But they reckon that soon
They'll extinguish that plume
As the firefighters spray foam and water
Don't know who'll take the blame
For this humungous flame
Did the workers all do what they ought ta?

And it makes me wonder...
...someone made a blunder?

If there's a big bang in the distance
Don't be alarmed now
It's one more tank going KABLOOEY!
Don't worry if you're living close by
'Cause in the long run
There's still time for emigration

The cloud is growing and it won't go
In case you don't know
You won't be safe up in your attic
It may clear quicker if the wind blow
But it's too slow
And kinda hard if you're asthmatic

* * *

And as we drive on down the road
Black shadows spreading as we go
And you can see the wind that blow
It's looking like it's gonna snow
Millions of gallons up in smoke
But guys are fighting very hard
Soon they will put it out at last
When fallout's all that's left to fall
A whole depot of burning oil
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
And it's sending a cloud up to heaven

Great work and turnaround time on this news story Phil. A bit unsettling for me since I live with 1000' of two enormous propane supply tanks - I suppose if they were to go I'll never know what hit me.

Very good parodic news...

Very timely and well done, Phil, particularly the "attic/asthmatic" couplet. If this does cause some of you Brits to consider emigration, where ya gonna go?

Let me be the first (I think) to congratulate you for 600 parodies with a lot of quality and a lot of variety.

Thank you, John - yes, I think you are the first to notice :-) (I wasn't going to give it any great mention, having made a bit more of a fuss over the number 555)

Congrats on 600, Phil and, as John said, a lot of quality and diversity in there. Another three-fiver here.

Found this via the random feature, Phil. Good story about the story. I gave it three fires and hope Hemel Hempstead is all that it ever was. Would that be a good thing? :)

Thanks, Pippin - as for whether that would be a good thing, here's Mat Lloyd (a Hemel poet) talking about it:
