Song Parodies -> Conway's Song
| Original Song Title: | "Annie's Song" |
| Original Performer: | John Denver |
| Parody Song Title: | "Conway's Song" |
| Parody Written by: | Phil Alexander |
Derek Conway is an MP, at least until the next election. He gained a brief notoriety for employing his two sons at taxpayers' expense while they were at University, and not managing to provide any evidence that they'd done any work at all.
In the Parliamentary Standards Commission report, Conway's son Freddie was referred to as "FC". Although Conway senior has said sorry, he has had the party whip withdrawn (in effect, he is no longer a Conservative party MP), but is staying on until the next election (a decision, I am sure, that has nothing whatsoever to do with the pension he will receive being considerably larger if he does remain the full term). The link above also mentions him employing his wife, and a friend of his son who rejoices in the moniker "Pratte". Honest.
Derek Conway is also responsible for possibly the most smug Christmas card photo ever used.

You fiddled expenses, put your son on the payroll
While he was a student, and was always away
His work was non-existent yet you gave him a bonus
You fiddled expenses, FC did sweet FA
Employed your wife, too, and your elder son, also
All except your daughter - had she more sense than that?
Am I starting to bore you? So who else has worked for you?
Some friend of your son, too - you employed a Pratte
For fiddling expenses, got a ten day suspension
Tory whip was withdrawn and you looked like a fool
Now MPs have decided on a moving of goalposts:
No fiddling expenses - they're changing the rules

Nicely done with yet more arcane references, at least to my Miss South Carolina-esque "U.S-American" provincial brain!
Very good spoof of politics as usual. Thanks for the links.
In this country we're way too kind to our nest-feathering MPs: suspended from the house for ten days, made to pay back roughly a quarter of what one of his children was paid.. and that's it. Grr...
