The Lyrics

This parody is mostly based on the book "The Godfather", by Mario Puzo. Some, if not most, of the references will make sense if you've only seen the movie. This parody also draws on another mafia book called "Honor Thy Father", by Gay Talese. I actually did this for an assignment in college and I wasn't sure I'd even submit it here. After reading it, my Professor convinced me.
Well not so long ago
I can still remember
How the families used Italian style
And I knew when I had my chance
To ask the Don for a cash advance
My fam-ly would be happy for a while
But then the trouble made me shiver
Don't want to end up in the river
Vito and Solozzo
The warring of Bonanno
I can't recall who's on who's side
Or who now has a widowed bride
But everyone must run and hide
Inside the mafia...

So my, my, mister Mafia guy
Organizing and devising
In a suit and a tie
You live your way and take an eye for an eye
Wonder will this be the day that you die?
Will this be the day that you die?

Ask the Don when it's OK
'cause he won't say 'NO' on a wedding day
Just look at Amerigo
In the garden they just have a ball
While Hagen looks out at them all
But Michael wouldn't say hello, Oh no
Chapter ONE and someone's getting laid
When Santino landed that brides-maid
The book's romanticized
Are you really so surprised?
All in all, prohibition brought us luck
Smuggle alcohol on a shipping truck
A clever way to make a buck
Inside the mafia...

I started drinkin...
My, my, mister Mafia guy
Organizing and devising
In a suit and a tie
You live your way and take an eye for an eye
Wonder will this be the day that you die?
Will this be the day that you die?

Now Luca Brasi in how he served
The only one to make the Don unnerved
But he just gave the biggest gift
And though Johnny sang to Nino's pair
He complained that his life was not fair
And his voice could surely use a lift
Oh, the Don's a man of subtle force
Recall the head of Woltz's horse
Fanucci your time's through
Hell's Kitchen murdered you
But it's not about a killing spree
Performing masculinity
And honoring the family tree
Inside the mafia...

We were singin'...
My, my, mister Mafia guy
Organizing and devising
In a suit and a tie
You live your way and take an eye for an eye
Wonder will this be the day that you die?
Will this be the day that you die?

Neato, Vito, bullets came to greeto
The leadership fell then to Santino
And Michael joined the cause at last
The Don survived but no more Sonny
And no more of Michael's foreign honey
Both friend and foe, namely Carlo, falling fast
Now to make things short, Don passed away
And Mike, in charge, got back with Kay
They all moved to L.A.
Now let's here from Mister Gay
So journey with me if you will
A book that's like a sleeping pill
But I sat there and read it still
Bonanno's Mafia...

We started sleepin'...
My, my, mister Mafia guy
Organizing and devising
In a suit and a tie
You live your way and take an eye for an eye
Wonder will this be the day that you die?
Will this be the day that you die?

Talese wrote of Bonanno's life
His friends, his kids and of course his wife
Too much detail in the way
So come on Bill be wary, stay at home
And speak in riddles on the telephone
Rosalie got bored and ran away
Stefano's brother, Pete, who's he?
Talese provides his history
It's fourteen pages long (162-176)
Now that is just plain wrong
You know it's just so hard to focus in
On Bill and Joseph and their kin
These tangents wear my patience thin
Inside this Mafia...

We were singin'...
My, my, mister Mafia guy
Organizing and devising
In a suit and a tie
You live your way and take an eye for an eye
Wonder will this be the day that you die?
Will this be the day that you die?

But Rosalie would soon be home
Protected but not free to roam
And Kay would simply sit and pray
Both ladies put up with their gent.
The men they loved both came and went
But no matter what they never seemed to stay
And in the streets the bodies lay (lie)
Surrounded by the FBI
But not a word was spoken
The family ties were broken
And the two ways that I want to be
In control and yet still free
These cannot belong to me
Inside the Mafia...

We were singin'...
My, my, mister Mafia guy
Organizing and devising
In a suit and a tie
You live your way and take an eye for an eye
Wonder will this be the day that you die?
Will this be the day that you die?

We were singin'...
My, my, mister Mafia guy
Organizing and devising
In a suit and a tie
You live your way and take an eye for an eye
Wonder will this be the day that you die?
Doing this song was really fun. I'm gonna try again soon.

2nz - A long read, but definitely worth the time and effort. Your Professor was right and now I think you owe him, should he ever ask a special favor of you...5's

Very very nice- you put a lot of effort in and it shows. I know how hard this one is to do and you did some great ties with the original.

Thanks Rice, JD, Jan, Paul and Steve. I really appreciate all of your kind words. You know, with the addition of this one, the last three songs I've submitted here have been parodies to (in reverse chronological order) 'American Pie', 'We Didn't Start the Fire', and 'Blinded by the Light'. I figure after these, everything else will seem much easier :c).

Yes, you do choose challenging songs, 2nz. Great job! =)

Very good parody, 2nz. "Neato, Vito" was a very clever way of handling the "Helter skelter" line.

Billy Florio already did "American Pie" to "The Godfather," so be careful you don't end up with the head of Mr. Horse (of "Smurf &...") in your bed. (Don't get on my case, especially after Billy Crystal's "Seabiscuit" joke in his Oscar monologue!) And this is better than Billy's. I've wanted to write a "Godfather" parody too, but it's gonna have to be respectful... someday... and that day may never come...

Thanks Mike. I didn't even realize Billy had beaten me to it. I gotta check that out now.

Great job, 2nz -- I'm shocked to my socks to see that this doesn't have a lot more votes than it does, especially considering how many people have known the original to rate some of the other parodies of it I've seen. I hope the SOTM contest gives your tally a boost.

Thanks, Adagio, martha, and Merry. Melhi, I hope so too, and thank you. I'll be busy, so I'll be doing the rounds very slowly. And thanks to everyone else who comes out to see it for the tourney and puts in the several minutes necessary to read the whole thing. I appreciate that in and of itself.

So lemme get this straight - you were more willing to submit this as a college assignment than you were to submit it here? Povero ragazzo, where are your priorities?
The Godfather is a prime example of a the movie being better than the book, and the Gay Talese section sailed over my head, but that ain't your fault. I digress. Extremely well done.

Excellent work 2nz!

Well, DKTOS, where S stands for source rather than song. Call me strange, but I really couldn't get through The Godfather (the movie, I've never read the book). Pacing is fine, and I can't really grade it down on humor just because I don't get it. If I also hadn't known the song, I just wouldn't voted, but the original song is a classic, so yeah... 5/5/5

Never read the book; fell asleep during the movie so I probably wouldn't have read this if it weren't for the contest. Glad I did, though. Excellent stuff. My favorite part was the "sleeping pill" couplet.

You're making this March SOTM contest very difficult. Lotta great ones, and this is one of them.

Tre' cinque por 'sta. Moto bene. Travisimo. I must have missed this first ime out and just read it for the SOTM. Well done. This is definately a must vote for in SOTM.

Thanks Guy, Spaff, Pip, Paul, C4P and nem. It's been quite fun, and I look forward to see as many of you as possible in the next round. You know what's cool? This is the first parody of mine that has gotten 20 or more votes. It was up to 19 votes when the messageboard went down, so I thought fate was just taunting me.
