Song Parodies -> Akela
| Original Song Title: | "Layla" |
| Original Performer: | Derek And The Dominoes |
| Parody Song Title: | "Akela" |
| Parody Written by: | Stuart McArthur |
The leader of a cub-scout pack is called Akela (uh-KAY-la). My cub-scout pack's Akela once took us camping in the forest. 9-year-old boys are supposed to love that stuff. I, however, didn't.............(Syllable purists will note that while "Layla" has 2 syllables, "Akele" has 2 and 1/4 syllables - sorry - I nervously await my punishment :-(
What'll I do? I'm feeling lonely
without my mummy by my side
A dog is howl'n......my tent has fallen down......
I need someone to sympathise
Ake-la!
I tripped and skinned my knees
Akela
mercurochrome them please
Akela
I'm hoping that you'll ease
my worried mind
and I keep having recurring nightmares
I think I let my cub-pack down
because last night......I'm pretty sure that I......
...wore my woggle upside down
Akela!
I can't climb up that tree
Akela
I'm only 4 foot three
Akela
The other boys can be
really unkind
I made the best of the situation
but gee willikers that's enough
Please don't say......I'm sissy or I'm gay......
I just dislike outdoorsy stuff
Akela!
I think I'm gonna freeze
Akela
I think I'm gonna sneeze
Akela
I think my tent's mischiev-
ously designed
Akela!
I guess I'm no Mowgli
Akela
I miss my new puppy
Akela
I guess I'll never be
the scouting kind

I was also in Cub Scouts, I don't recall that term though. We called them Scout Masters.
fits the angst ridden tone of the OS well
Howlingly funny. Or something like that :-D
That extra 1/4 syllable TOTALLY ruined it for me.....;-) just kidding! This was a whole campfire of fun. I never joined the scouts, so I never experiences the humiliation, injury and general discomfort scouts describe as "fun" Still, this was a 555 jamboree!!
At first I thought you did a typo pun thingy on "I'll kill her" to make it match the pacing, and it was gonna be about an a-hole spouse or girlfriend. 5s still though
Alright, alright, fine...pacing 5, and everything else, too, even though the intro explanation is mandatory. Didja know there's a U.S. movie called "Akeelah & the Bee"? eh, no relation I'm sure.
hmm, my link left our a character - it should have been http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akela_%28Scouting%29
which will explain that the leader of a cubpack is called "Akela"
thanks Matthias, but wikipedia clearly misled me, because the above entry implies it's a term used worldwide
thanks alvin and Phil (yes we also called cubs "wolf cubs" not "cub scouts" but I thought the latter would be more widely understood)
thanks Kristof - sorry about that 1/4 syllable again (if you say it quickly it's more like an 1/8) - and yes, cubs was very injurious!! (as your parody says, "They only want to injure you")
thanks Jack, and Ag (no, I've never heard of that movie)

It's more like 1/64th a syllable...IOW, perfect pacing. Since the extra (debate fractionality here) syllable is at the beginning of the line, and there is plenty of room to fit it in, it scans effortlessly.
Kudos for working in "mercurochrome", and lol at "I'm only 4 foot three". 555.
Since you've successfully broken the "pacing barrier" (ha!), why not do this OS again to "Australia"? ; )

thanks muchly Jack - they would have been my arguments exactly - and wow, it would be good to get the 4 syllables of "Australia" into the 2 available slots without upsetting the pacing pedants - hmm, there's a challenge ;-)
although as I keep pointing out, Weird Al has already done that by using "You won't get no dessert" as a sub for "You wanna be tough"

Dib dib dib vote vote vote 5 5 5 :) I would have no problem hearing Australia as two syllables. Let's face it, I have to keep accepting that words like orange and squirrel only have one syllable, don't I? I said Don't I, Merry? :)
If we can have them, we can halve Australia. Lets start by setting the west adrift :)

"it would be good to get the 4 syllables of 'Australia' into the 2 available slots...": aw-STRAIL-ya, same as (uh-KAY-la). Problem solved. =)
(ABC4) Ging gang gooley gooley 555!
(ABC4) See above, and thanks also for doing this to TOS and not Eric Clapton's Unplugged snorefest version.
Good
(ABC) I also dislike outdoorsy stuff. Hmmm . . .what to say on this one. . .funny describes it well. . .certainly kept my interest. . .what's a woogle though?
See above
Couldn't relate to this one as much as your others, but still enjoyed reading about the cub scouts =)
(ABC) *tries to repress bad memories of Girl Scout camp* Anyway, this was great. Short but to the point!
ABC- The pacing wasn't a problem for me. This was still enjoyable and very funny. Good job, Stu.
