Could there actually be a Curse on the Yankees? One that doesn't involve Alex Rodriguez, the Great Sham-bino? Is Donald Arthur Mattingly the true cause? The Yankees won the Pennant in 1981, the year before he got there, and in 1996, the year after he left. They didn't win it in 1997, the year his Number 23 was retired and his Monument Park plaque was dedicated. Then they won five Pennants in the next six years. Then he was hired as hitting instructor, and in two seasons with him in that job, the Yanks have faced two -- love this word, but hate having to use it here -- ignominious postseason defeats, and no Pennants. Are we looking at The Curse of Donnie Baseball?
