The Lyrics

This song parody attempts to address the burning question, "What would Elvis Pressley have sung about if he had been born in the USSR "
Seven lonely weeks
And a mass evac ago
I woke up one morn
And you were gone
Don't know where you'd run
What you're running to or from
All I know
Is there's noone
LEFT IN TOWN!

So I'm walking in the rain
In this heavy lead lined suit
On this abandoned
Ukrainian highway
I've lived here much too long
My love's too strong
To let you go
Never knowing
WHAT WENT WRONG!

Chernobyl rain keeps falling dowm
And here's another lifeless town
That I go
Walking through!
With the lead in my shoes (Lead in my shoes)
SEARCHING FOR YOU!
In the cold Chernobyl rain (Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
In the cold Chernobyl rain ...

Showed your photograph
To a kid in a hazmat suit
Sitting on a stool
Outiside a decom station
He said, "Yes she was scrubbed down here."
But his memory wasn't clear
Was it early May*
No wait
THE MONTH BEFORE!

Finally got a ride
With a komissar who asked
What are you doing
In this restricted area?
As we drove on through the rain
He wouldn't let me explain
And yelled at me
To get out
OR I'LL ARREST YOU!

Chernobyl rain keeps falling down
And here's another lifeless town
That I go walking through!
Wth the lead in my shoes (lead in my shoes)
SEARCHING FOR YOU!
In the cold Chernobyl rain (Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
In the cold Chernnobyl rain ....

*The Chernobyl disaster occurred at 1:23 A.M on April 26, 1986

I once saw a documentary about the crippled reactor and the abandoned city around it. The local authorities put up speakers around the streets and were playing morbid sounding instrumental music, the same sort of soundtrack a movie maker would have used to portray the Chernobyl story.

Lennie: I'm surprised and pleased to see this topic after 25+ years. The 2011 Japan earthquake/tsunami may have awakened your interest. See ~misc/fatsdomino24.shtml and ~misc/pattipage12.shtml for earlier takes.
