Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> The Platters

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

20th Century Masters: The Best Of The Platters (Millennium Collection) album at
The Platters', "Harbour Lights"
The Misheard Lyrics:
But you were gone to s***
And I love Dinah Shore
The Real Lyrics:
But you were on the ship
And I was on the shore.
The Story: I first heard this song when it was playing on a radio in another room, and I thought 'what the heck?' as the misheard lyrics struck me and stuck in my mind. I asked my friend, who is a fan of songs from back then, what it said. He told me and we both had a big laugh. He even has a cd with the song on it. Later he played it for me, and up close it is clear what the real words are. - Submitted by: Cheryl Tate
The Platters', "Only You (And You Alone)"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Only you canned...make this world seem right.
The Real Lyrics:
Only you can make this world seem right
The Story: Apparently girls were delivered packaged and shelf ready in the days this song was recorded. No mention of whether an expiration date was stamped on the can. (Did they punch air holes in it too?) - Submitted by: Kent V
The Platters', "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Small dents in your eyes
The Real Lyrics:
Smoke gets in your eyes
The Story: I always thought it was about 'small dents in your eyes' and sung along to it when my parents played the record. I thought it a bit macabre, and remember being really surprised later in life when I found out that it didn't say that at all. - Submitted by: Dawn Beatson-njie
