Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> The Edwin Hawkins Singers

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

The Edwin Hawkins Singers', "Oh Happy Day!"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Oh, happy day
When Jesus swore
The Real Lyrics:
Oh, happy day
When Jesus washed
The Story: Back in the late 1960's/early 1970's when I was between 5 to 7 years old I misheard the word "washed" with "swore", on the 60's Satellite Survey on the 60's Gold Channel on Siriusxm, this tune just played, and I did mishear as that. LOL! I have wondered since I was younger whether if Jesus got away with his swearing? LOL! - Submitted by: Peter
The Edwin Hawkins Singers', "Oh Happy Day!"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Windy, there's a war
The Real Lyrics:
When Jesus washed
The Story: As a small boy in the 1960s, I mistakenly thought the song was about Windy Miller who had to go and fight in the Vietnam War! Windy Miller was a BBCTV Children's programme and he was an animated character who lived in err... a windmill. Strange but True. - Submitted by: Quentin QueerPiece
