Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> The Commodores

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Commodores album at Amazon.com
The Commodores', "Brick House"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Built like a n*****man's arm.
The Real Lyrics:
Built like a black Amazon.
The Story: I always thought that was what they were saying until about two weeks ago, when I mentioned the lyric in mixed company, talking about how relaxed we were back in the 70's. Wow, was I embarassed. - Submitted by: Gina
The Commodores', "Brickhouse"
The Misheard Lyrics:
She's a freak, owwww!
I like laying in the sack, pass my back
Ain't holding nothing back.
The Real Lyrics:
She's a brick-house
That lady's stacked, and that's a fact
Ain't holdin' nothin' back.
The Story: For years, I sang it incorrectly ever since hearing it on my uncle's vinyl albums (then on the radio years later or at clubs). I had no clue until someone who was older than I asked me what the heck I had just said. I felt like a moron. - Submitted by: Marianne
The Commodores', "Easy"
The Misheard Lyrics:
You see I fixed all that I borrowed.
The Real Lyrics:
You see I beg, stole, and I borrowed.
The Story: I imagined someone who had a habit of accidentally breaking everything that he borrowed. - Submitted by: John
The Commodores', "Sail On"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I guess I was just
Fish for bacon.
The Real Lyrics:
I guess I was just
Wishful thinking.
The Story: I had always wondered why they would of used such a strange comparison in a love song, and thought maybe I was missing some hidden meaning. So I stupidly asked my best friend 'What do they mean by 'Fish For Bacon?' She is still laughing! - Submitted by: Tammy
The Commodores', "Three Times A Lady"
The Misheard Lyrics:
when we are together
the moon is like cherries
The Real Lyrics:
When we are together,
the moments I cherish
