Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> The Brothers Four

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Brothers Four - Greatest Hits album at Amazon.com
The Brothers Four's, "Green Leaves of Summer"
The Misheard Lyrics:
A time to be sullen
The Real Lyrics:
A time to be sowin'
The Story: I was 11 years old when this song came out, and I didn't know much about planting crops, or the word "sow"--rhymes with "bow"--for planting seed. I knew what "sullen" meant, though, and that's what I thought they were singing about--though it didn't fit the context at all. - Submitted by: Doug Montgomery
The Brothers Four's, "Try To Remember"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Deep in December
It's nice to remember
The fire of September
That made a smell, oh!
or
Deep in December
It's nice to remember
The fire of September
That made us smell, oh!
The Real Lyrics:
Deep in December
It's nice to remember
The fire of September
That made us mellow.
The Story: When I first heard this, I had not yet learned the word 'mellow', so I wasn't likely to hear it in the song. So I heard the best I could! - Submitted by: Melissa Conway
