Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Taco

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Puttin' On the Ritz album at Amazon.com
Taco's, "Puttin' On The Ritz"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Puddin' on the roots
The Real Lyrics:
Puttin' on the ritz
The Story: I used to think it was a song about eating wild plants in the wilderness, where you dip the roots in pudding. I have to admit it didn't make sense with the rest of the lyrics. - Submitted by: Chad
Taco's, "Puttin' On The Ritz"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Trying hard to look like Barry Crouper
The Real Lyrics:
Trying hard to look like Gary Cooper
The Story: Spent years trying to find out who Barry Crouper was then searched the lyrics one day and saw it was Gary Cooper which makes more sense. - Submitted by: Emma Hanby
Taco's, "Puttin' On the Ritz"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Diamond wine, but not tonight
The time is right for us and I
The Real Lyrics:
Dine and wine, but not 'til nine
The time is right for us tonight
The Story: I assumed “diamond wine” was some really fancy expensive old time brand of wine from the 1920s, a reference like “Arrow Collars” and Gary Cooper. Things that I, a kid in the 1990s, wouldn’t automatically know about. - Submitted by: Sarah Perry
Taco's, "Puttin' On the Ritz"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Putin on the Ritz.
The Real Lyrics:
Puttin' on the Ritz.
The Story: The word "putting" sounds alike with second name of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin. - Submitted by: Tagir
