Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Spencer Davis Group

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Spencer Davis Group's, "Gimme Some Lovin'"
The Misheard Lyrics:
And I soak your head in gravy
Soak your head in gravy.
The Real Lyrics:
And I'm so glad we made it
So glad we made it.
The Story: This lyric was related to me by my first husband's two brothers, who both heard the same misheard lyric. 'You know, the soak your head in gravy song.' I said, 'The WHAT?????', and they sang it for me. - Submitted by: Jeannie Burgess
Spencer Davis Group's, "Gimme Some Lovin'"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Been a hard day nothing went too good.
Now I'm gonna relax, buddy everybody shout.
And I'm so bad baby, so bad baby.
I want you to gimme some loving.
Gimme some loving.
Gimme some loving.
The Real Lyrics:
Been a hard day nothing went too good.
Now I'm gonna relax, buddy everybody should.
And I'm so glad we made it, so glad we made it.
You got to gimme some loving.
Gimme some loving.
Gimme some loving.
The Story: How do you feel why Steve Winwood so bad he made it? Don't know anymore. I change it to more second-person pronoun than its original lyrics. About this song: There are two different recording. The original Fontana version, which is the "master" take of the song, differs in several respects from the version subsequently released in the United Artists, being slower, lacking the "response" backing vocals in the chorus, some percussion, and the "live-sounding" ambience of the United Artists single. These additional overdubs, and the 'tweaking' of the recording's speed to create a brighter sound, were the work of producer Jimmy Miller, who remixed the song for its United Artists release. (The United Artists version has more often been used on reissue CDs, even those coming from Europe.) The single features the sound of the Hammond B-3 organ, which was previously used by Deep Purple in their recordings and was sampled by Rush by using synthesizer. "Gimme Some Lovin'" was peaking at #2 on the UK Singles Chart and at #7 on Billboard's Pop Chart and ranking #247 on Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time". It was written by Steve Winwood, Spencer Davis, and Muff Winwood, although solely credited to "Steve Winwood" on the Fontana label. - Submitted by: Wisnu Aji
Spencer Davis Group's, "I'm A Man"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Well, my panties bear a message.
The Real Lyrics:
Well, my pad is very messy.
The Story: I swear, I thought I heard Winwood say his panties bear a message-- I asked a bunch of friends and they, too, heard this. The only contradiction was, having your underwear bear a message is a rather girlish thing to do, so I decided to check out the lyrics online -- and I guess my imagination was simply overactive the day I heard this. - Submitted by: Isabella van Helsing
