Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Roxy Music

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Roxy Music's, "Dance Away"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Dance away the party
or
Dance away the hard way
The Real Lyrics:
Dance away the heartache
The Story: I kept thinking it was either party or hard way. - Submitted by: Cody Finke
Roxy Music's, "Editions Of You"
The Misheard Lyrics:
And as I was drifting past the L' Aurelay
I heard the slinky siren whales: wooooa.
The Real Lyrics:
And as I was drifting past the Lorelei
I heard those slinky sirens wail - whooo.
The Story: Well ,when I was 20 I bought 'For your pleasure' - I just loved it and still do. But I never quite understood the lyrics. I thounght 'L'Aureley' was some French harbour or something. But with whales???! - Submitted by: Karin Christensen SWEDEN
Roxy Music's, "Love Is the Drug"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Love is the truck
The Real Lyrics:
Love is the drug
The Story: Once again, why trucks are better than drugs. - Submitted by: Cody Finke
Roxy Music's, "Love Is the Drug"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Oh, c*nt you see? Love is the drug for me. [unless it's a sneaky pun!]
The Real Lyrics:
Oh, can't you see? Love is the drug for me.
The Story: Don't know if it is accidental but the British are known for dry wit. The rest of the song seems to avoid double entendres, so perhaps I just have a filthy mind :) - Submitted by: Ben
Roxy Music's, "More Than This"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Modern air I know there's nothing
The Real Lyrics:
More than this I know there's nothing
The Story: It doesn't seem reasonable that you can say "this" without an "s" sound being heard... especially since that sound is exaggerated by microphones and even in studios and also live, it often has to be specially processed to be less prominent. - Submitted by: Sibban
Roxy Music's, "Street Life"
The Misheard Lyrics:
When I pick you up there's no one there
So I walk outside just a derrière
The Real Lyrics:
When I pick it up there's no one there
So I walk outside just to take the air
The Story: Bryan Ferry often sang in French, so this seemed to make sense. - Submitted by: dellabarre
Roxy Music's, "Virginia Plain"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Can't you see that whore's a man? What's her name, Virginia Plain
The Real Lyrics:
Can't you see that Holzer mane? What's her name, Virginia Plain
The Story: - Submitted by: Dave Rubens
Roxy Music's, "Virginia Plain"
The Misheard Lyrics:
You're so sheer, you're so sh*t
Teenage rebel I'd like to meet
The Real Lyrics:
You're so sheer, you're so chic
Teenage rebel of the week.
The Story: When the video clip was played on MTV and MuchMusic, and when I heard this song on the Q I figured it had that word in it (pronounced "sheeet", as in "the sh*t"). I later got a Roxy hits tape but it had no lyrics printed. Besides, what's with the name? Is the girl "Virginia Plain" a "Plain Jane" or something else? Anyone know? - Submitted by: I Did The Strand
Roxy Music's, "Virginia Plain"
The Misheard Lyrics:
You're so sheer, you're so sh*t
The Real Lyrics:
You're so sheer, you're so chic
The Story: GREAT SONG but I didn't know what "chic" meant. Even when the funk band Chic scored with hits like "Freak Out" I thought they were pronounced "chick" and later on still I thought the word "chic" was pronounced the way it sounds like ("sheik"). Bryan's English accent distorts the word a little and I took it that he was calling her crap. - Submitted by: Lover of Virginia Plain Sweet Jane
