Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Paul Hardcastle

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

The Misheard Lyrics:
More than 700 enemy troops were killed last week
In access to the portive area
The Real Lyrics:
More than 700 enemy troops were killed last week
In that sensitive border area
The Story: At the computer store I worked at in 1985 the radio was always on in the background, and this song would play all the time ( ≈ twice a day, every day) in the summer of 1985.

Part of the song's lyrics are spoken rather than sung, including the part above, and I could never tell for sure what was being said in the 2nd line above, only that it sounded like what I wrote . . . I surmised that a "portive area" might be a designated area where helicopters picked up injured soldiers and airlifted them to a medical treatment facility, or something. Turns out that while the word "portive" does exist, it doesn't appear in the song. - Submitted by: Mike Mounier
