Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Paula Cole

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Paula Cole's, "I Don't Want To Wait"
The Misheard Lyrics:
And say a little prayer for I.
The Real Lyrics:
And say a little prayer forthright.
The Story: I am a band vocalist, and we usually play acid jazz. There was a time we played the song, 'I Don't Wanna Wait'. There was this particular girl who kept singing totally different lyrics--at the top of her lungs!! I had no idea if I was the one confused, or if she really knew the lyrics. - Submitted by: jade
Paula Cole's, "I Don't Want To Wait"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I don’t want to wait for our lives to be over Well, we’d be S.O.L. if he’s Sorry
The Real Lyrics:
I don't want to wait for our lives to be over Will it be yes or will it be Sorry
The Story: I did not realize that I was singing this incorrectly for over ten years! Guess I should have realized a T. V. theme song would not include "S. O. L.". - Submitted by: Porkbeard
Paula Cole's, "I Don't Want To Wait"
The Misheard Lyrics:
She had two babies
One plus six, minus four, is three.
The Real Lyrics:
She had two babies
One was six and one was three.
The Story: Listened to this song because it's the theme to 'Dawson's Creek'. When I first heard that line, thats what I thought it was. And I turned the song down, and did the math. I did the math wrong and said, 'Well, that doesn't make sense. 1 plus 6 minus four isn't three.' The driver looked at me and said, 'Yea it is, but that's not what she said.' So now we always sing the math equation instead of the real words. - Submitted by: Tim
Paula Cole's, "I Don't Want to Wait"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Lady Marmalade
The Real Lyrics:
I don't want to wait
The Story: I thought she referenced a hit by LaBelle. - Submitted by: Cody Finke
Paula Cole's, "I Don't Want to Wait"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Open up your morning light
And say a little prayer for Ry
The Real Lyrics:
Open up your morning light
And say a little prayer for I
The Story: I thought she wanted people to pray for a guy named Ryan, because I figured Ry was a nickname for Ryan. (I was eight years old and didn't think to consider it was 'I', and that the 'r' sound was only for the word 'for', because apparently at eight years old, I had better grammar than an adult Paula Cole.) - Submitted by: Josh
Paula Cole's, "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Where is my Charlie?
The Real Lyrics:
Where is my John Wayne?
The Story: This is a submission in memory of my late father, Charles Finke (1947-2021), who had passed away in March. My father happened to love cowboys and westerns, so this is what I have figured. - Submitted by: Cody Finke
