Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Neil Sedaka

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Neil Sedaka's, "Calendar Girl"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I love my cow and a girl.
The Real Lyrics:
I love my calendar girl.
The Story: Singer Brenda Lee congratulated Sedaka on his new hit 'A Cow and A Girl'. This was from a broadcast in which Neil Sedaka related this gaffe from a fellow pop-star. - Submitted by: Russ Salter
Neil Sedaka's, "Calender Girl"
The Misheard Lyrics:
You start the year so fine
You're my sweet little valentine.
The Real Lyrics:
January, you start the year so fine
February, you're my sweet little valentine.
The Story: I'm using this as a misheard lyric because the months in the background only come out of one speaker. If that particular speaker is not working, they will not be heard. - Submitted by: Jeffrey Hope
Neil Sedaka's, "One Way Ticket to the Blues"
The Misheard Lyrics:
One-day cricket on the moon
The Real Lyrics:
One way ticket to the blues
The Story: Only ever heard this song on the pub jukebox, so didn't know the title; it was out around the same time as 10cc's 'Dreadlock Holiday' containing the words 'I don't like cricket' which obviously set the scene ! - Submitted by: Mike Whittaker
Neil Sedaka's, "Poetry in Motion"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Oh a tree in motion
The Real Lyrics:
Poetry in motion
The Story: During the 80s, I started to be interested in Oldies as well as their lyrics. I liked (and still like) Neil Sedaka very much, especially this one. But I missed the dj announncing the title and got only the song itself, so, for a couple of years, I was sure that 'Oh a Tree in Motion' was my favourite by Neil Sedaka. (It never came to me, that with the second line 'walking by my side', this formed sort of a funny picture). To save my reputation - I am German and had learned English for only two or three years at school, then. On the other hand - I think this saves nothing at all. 'Oh a tree in motion, walking by my side' Oh my god... - Submitted by: Michael
