Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Neil Sedaka

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Neil Sedaka's, "Calendar Girl"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I love my cow and a girl.
The Real Lyrics:
I love my calendar girl.
The Story: Singer Brenda Lee congratulated Sedaka on his new hit 'A Cow and A Girl'. This was from a broadcast in which Neil Sedaka related this gaffe from a fellow pop-star. - Submitted by: Russ Salter
Neil Sedaka's, "Calendar Girl"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Yeah, yeah, my heart's in the world.
I love, I love, I love my little calendar girl.
Every day, every day, for you.
The Real Lyrics:
Yeah, yeah, my heart's in a whirl.
I love, I love, I love my little calendar girl.
Every day, every day, of the year.
The Story: When Rock Channel Radio adding "Calendar Girl" on Rock Channel's playlist for the first time, I haven't listen to this song and adding more songs like "Calendar Girl". I have listen to another songs by Hailee Steinfeld, Dream Theater, Blind Melon, etc. and later these songs being editing or trimming to more radio-friendly airplay. After that, the first time ever I hear to this song where used in a ordinary time. This song is the best! But, today I feel misheard with the song's lyrics or the song itself. When I hear to the song as Neil Sedaka (and backing vocals) sing "every day, every day, for you", other peoples who also listen to this song hear the song's lyrics as "every day, every day, of the year". Wish if Neil Sedaka is still alive in the age of modern time like 2016, he could re-recorded this song with no fade out ending and the lyrics "yeah, yeah, my heart's in a whirl" and "every day, every day, of the year" are changes to "yeah, yeah, my heart's in the world" and "every day, every day, for you" (also in the part of "April" and "December" where in April addressed to his love story and in December addressed to disaster story where Neil Sedaka lost his woman in Tsunami or other meaning where Neil Sedaka live in December). The re-recording version, Neil Sedaka repeatedly sing "I love, I love, I love my calendar girl, yeah sweet calendar girl" four times and ended with guitar's last key. For the song's vocal, I feel that Neil Sedaka's vocal is similar to the vocal of Gary Lewis & The Playboys in their greatest song, "This Diamond Ring". - Submitted by: Wisnu Aji
Neil Sedaka's, "Calender Girl"
The Misheard Lyrics:
You start the year so fine
You're my sweet little valentine.
The Real Lyrics:
January, you start the year so fine
February, you're my sweet little valentine.
The Story: I'm using this as a misheard lyric because the months in the background only come out of one speaker. If that particular speaker is not working, they will not be heard. - Submitted by: Jeffrey Hope
Neil Sedaka's, "One Way Ticket to the Blues"
The Misheard Lyrics:
One-day cricket on the moon
The Real Lyrics:
One way ticket to the blues
The Story: Only ever heard this song on the pub jukebox, so didn't know the title; it was out around the same time as 10cc's 'Dreadlock Holiday' containing the words 'I don't like cricket' which obviously set the scene ! - Submitted by: Mike Whittaker
Neil Sedaka's, "Poetry in Motion"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Oh a tree in motion
The Real Lyrics:
Poetry in motion
The Story: During the 80s, I started to be interested in Oldies as well as their lyrics. I liked (and still like) Neil Sedaka very much, especially this one. But I missed the dj announncing the title and got only the song itself, so, for a couple of years, I was sure that 'Oh a Tree in Motion' was my favourite by Neil Sedaka. (It never came to me, that with the second line 'walking by my side', this formed sort of a funny picture). To save my reputation - I am German and had learned English for only two or three years at school, then. On the other hand - I think this saves nothing at all. 'Oh a tree in motion, walking by my side' Oh my god... - Submitted by: Michael
Neil Sedaka's, "Stairway to Heaven"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Up high to the highest store
The Real Lyrics:
I'll climb to the highest star
The Story: It seems that way when it sounds like "store", like the highest elevation above sea level. - Submitted by: Cody Finke
