Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Murmaids

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Murmaids', "Popsicles and Icicles"
The Misheard Lyrics:
He loves green skies and brown eyes and...
The Real Lyrics:
He loves Levis and brown eyes and...
The Story: I discovered the real lyrics to this line incidentally while looking up the song on a lyrics site to confirm the real lyrics of another misheard line. I was a bit surprised to see the mention of Levis in a song from the early 1960s. If they mean Levi's jeans, I didn't remember them being such a craze before the early 1970s or so. - Submitted by: Heather Patton
Murmaids', "Popsicles and Icicles"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Popsicles, icicles
Baseball and fancy gloves
The Real Lyrics:
Popsicles and icicles
Baseball and fancy clothes
The Story: In thinking I herad 'gloves', I was thinking baseball gloves, since it is mentioned just after baseball. After all, that makes for at least as reasonable a juxtaposition as popsicles and icicles, now, doesn't it? - Submitted by: Heather Patton
Murmaids', "Popsicles, Icicles"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Brides' cars and, get Tarzan
or
Brides, cars, and get Tarzan
The Real Lyrics:
Bright stars and guitars and...
The Story: Here's another case where all sorts of strange juxtapositions can arise in one's imagination with a song whose real lyrics already have some strange juxtapositions in them, beginning with the title line. - Submitted by: Heather Patton
