Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Missy Elliot

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Missy Elliot's, "Work It"
The Misheard Lyrics:
If you're primitive, that's why I'm here, child
or
It's your fremme neppa venette
or
It's your girl thingy if you get it wet, n***a
or
It's your fault I ain't nut yet
or
It's yours if you make the girl thingy wet.
The Real Lyrics:
I put my thang down, flip it and reverse it.
The Story: A few of the passages in this song are recorded backwards. The 'fremme neppa venette' theory has made its rounds through numerous Missy Elliot fansites. Some believe she is actually speaking Norwegian ('fremme neppa' means 'assist barely,' and 'Venette' means Venice in a number of languages). Interesting sidenote: Missy is a music producer, and 'flipping' and 'reversing' are terms associated with audio editing. She literally flipped and reversed her 'I put my thang down, flip it and reverse it' line, and recorded it backwards in the refrain. - Submitted by: Olvan The Terrible
