Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Mike + The Mechanics

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Mike + The Mechanics', "All I Need Is A Miracle"
The Misheard Lyrics:
All I need is a beer or two
All I need is to spew.
The Real Lyrics:
All I need is a miracle
All I need is you.
The Story: My brother was convinced these were the lyrics, and hearing it live, I couldn't argue with him. How bad was that performance!? - Submitted by: LiSlangstress
Mike + The Mechanics', "Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground)"
The Misheard Lyrics:
There's a girl in Ammunitions
Just inside the doorway
Use her only in emergencies
The Real Lyrics:
There's a gun and ammunition
Just inside the doorway
Use it in emergencies
The Story: I've loved this song for 30+ years. It's clearly about a war, and I really thought the singer was telling us that there is a girl who works in Ammunitions, and that you should only "use" her, i.e., put moves on her, in emergencies, i.e., when you get really lonely. - Submitted by: Mitch45
Mike + The Mechanics', "The Living Years"
The Misheard Lyrics:
You can whistle as well as you hear
The Real Lyrics:
You can listen as well as you hear
The Story: As a kid, I always thought the lyrics where "you can whistle" not "you can listen" I didn't know how to whistle (still can't actually) and for some reason this made sense to me. As an adult I heard the song playing in the store one day, and it hit me that it was "listen" I hadn't heard the song in years, of course as an adult I would have know that whistle didn't make sense but I didn't think about it - Submitted by: Christina Coad
Mike + the Mechanics', "Silent Running"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Take those Trojans and yourself
And hide them in the cellar
(later)
Use it only in urgency
or
Use it only at the Virgin Sea
Better you should play with dogs
The Real Lyrics:
Take the children and yourself
And hide out in the cellar
(later)
Use it only in emergency
Better you should pray to God
The Story: I thought it could have been about condoms and dogs. - Submitted by: Cody Finke
Mike + the Mechanics', "Taken In"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Wrapped around your finger
The Real Lyrics:
Wrapped around the finger
The Story: I kept thinking this had to do with a song by the Police. - Submitted by: Cody Finke
Mike + the Mechanics', "The Living Years"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I know that I'm a sausage
The Real Lyrics:
I know that I'm a hostage
The Story: Sounded like he WAS a sausage. I guess it sounds funnier. - Submitted by: Cody Finke
