Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Men Without Hats

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Men Without Hats', "Safety Dance"
The Misheard Lyrics:
We can dance if we want to
We can leave your pants behind
'Cuz if your pants don't dance and if they don't dance
Then they're no pants of mine.
The Real Lyrics:
We can dance if we want to
We can leave your friends behind
'Cuz your friends don't dance and if they don't dance
Then they're no friends of mine.
The Story: I heard this on the radio when I was about 10 years old. The very first time I heard it, I thought it was a parody for a Spongebob Squarepants ad: 'You can wear Spongebob if you want to. You can wear him all the time. If you get the chance you can wear square pants, even on your behind'. So I think I must have confused that version with the original. - Submitted by: Nathan
Men Without Hats', "Safety Dance"
The Misheard Lyrics:
We can dance, we can dance, everything's out of control
We can dance, we can dance, we're doin' it in both holes.
The Real Lyrics:
We can dance, we can dance, everything's out of control
We can dance, we can dance, we're doin' it from pole to pole.
The Story: This was all I could discern from the lyrics for years. I had to buy the recording in 1996 to finally figure out what they were really saying. - Submitted by: C. Thompson
Men Without Hats', "Safety Dance"
The Misheard Lyrics:
We'll save the dance
The Real Lyrics:
We'll safety dance.
The Story: When I first heard this song, everybody was saying it was about a ban on slam dancing. (It wasn't.) So 'We'll save the dance' made a lot of sense to me. - Submitted by: Mjn Seifer
