Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Lou Bega

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Lou Bega's, "Mambo #5"
The Misheard Lyrics:
A little bit of mayonnaise on my mom
The Real Lyrics:
A little bit of Mary all night long
The Story: I was at a St. Patrick's Day party where a DJ was playing music. This song came on and I heard a lot of confusing lines in it. The nearest I could come to making out this line was as "A little bit of mayonnaise on my mom," although I quite doubted that could be the real lyrics. I didn't come up with any better guesses until I got home and searched for the lyrics online, and that's how I found the real lyrics to this line. I think my misheard version is more amusing. - Submitted by: Karen Smith
Lou Bega's, "Mambo #5"
The Misheard Lyrics:
To the liquor store, it's the cone of the voice.
or
To the liquor store, it's the cone of the month.
The Real Lyrics:
To the liquor store around the corner, the boys...
The Story: The first time I heard it, I interpreted it as 'cone of the month', because I thought somehow that Lou Bega was accepting the fact that he was a flavor of the month, with a poor repetior and generic, awful sounding music. Upon the second and third listening, it sounded more like 'cone of the voice'. At that point, I knew I couldn't have heard it right. - Submitted by: Crumb
Lou Bega's, "Mambo No. 5"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Mambo number fat
The Real Lyrics:
Mambo number five
The Story: This song came on the radio on the way home from work, and my coworker, who speaks English as a second language, asked what 'mambo number fat' was. - Submitted by: Me
Lou Bega's, "Mambo No. 5"
The Misheard Lyrics:
So what can I do? A really bad humidor
The Real Lyrics:
So what can I do? I really beg you, my Lord
The Story: I can't believe I'm the first person on this website to mishear this particular lyric! I swear it sounds just like he's saying "a really bad humidor"!! - Submitted by: Scary Shari
