Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Kyu Sakamoto

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Kyu Sakamoto's, "Sukiyaki"
The Misheard Lyrics:
He totally bought a cheatin' ho.
The Real Lyrics:
Hitoribotchi no yoru.
The Story: When I first heard this, I was still in an early enough stage of learning English to not always recognize when songs weren't in English, or at least some slang variation thereof. So I thought this song was in some English dialect/slang, of which I could make out few of the words. But as for the one line above, I thought I was pretty clearly hearing it as the misheard version indicates. - Submitted by: Lauren Overstreet
Kyu Sakamoto's, "Sukiyaki"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Hooray! A movie!
Had a cold!
The Real Lyrics:
Ue o Muite Arukō
The Story: "Ue o Muite Arukō" literally means "I will walk looking up" in Japanese. Ironically, "Ue o Muite Arukō" is the official title in Japan, where the singer Kyu Sakamoto and the song originated. This was the only #1 US Hot 100 song to be sung entirely in Japanese. A Taste of Honey and 4 PM translated the song into English versions. - Submitted by: Cody Finke
Kyu Sakamoto's, "Sukiyaki"
The Misheard Lyrics:
She told me bulls*** on you
The Real Lyrics:
Hitoribocchi no yoru
The Story: I wondered why an AM radio station played a song with swear words in it until my mom explained it was in Japanese. - Submitted by: Stucliffe
