Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton's, "Islands In The Stream"
The Misheard Lyrics:
And we'll lie on each other, ah, ha.
The Real Lyrics:
And we'll rely on each other, ah, ha.
The Story: My little 6 year old daughter loved this song and would bellow the wrong lyrics at the top of her voice. Nobody had the heart to put her straight !! - Submitted by: Lindsay Barron
Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton's, "Islands In The Stream"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Islands' Industry
That is what we are.
The Real Lyrics:
Islands in the stream
That is what we are.
The Story: This just reminds me of like a cruise line called Islands' Industry. Because the song also says, 'Sail away with me to another world'. Maybe like a cruise line for lovers. I can see Kenny Rogers dressed up as the Captain and Dolly Parton as the cruise director and they are like singing this whole song from the deck of the love boat or something. As like a TV advertisement to come on this cruise line for lovers. - Submitted by: Adam Mann
