Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Katie Melua

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Katie Melua's, "Nine Million Bicycles In Beijing"
The Misheard Lyrics:
There are nine million bison in Beijing.
The Real Lyrics:
There are nine million bicycles in Beijing.
The Story: I quoted to friend, 'I didn't know there were any Bison in China.' - Submitted by: Di Hughes
Katie Melua's, "Sailing Ships From Heaven"
The Misheard Lyrics:
For the second shifts from heaven won’t be long.
The Real Lyrics:
For the sailing ships from heaven won’t be long.
The Story: I was sitting in the lobby of an establishment, listening to the sound system when this song came on. Although it is a song I recently became vaguely familiar with, I didn't at first recognize it and I heard a line as clearly sounding like the misheard version above. On listening longer I soon recognized the song and realized I knew what the real lyrics to this line are. But on first hearing the line and not yet recognizing the song, what I heard did bear a striking resemblance to the misheard version quoted. - Submitted by: Karen Smith
