Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody.
For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.
This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.
Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not
by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see
misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and
misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Gimme the Beach Boys and free my soul.
Gimme the beat, boys, and free my soul.
The Story: My 22 year old son started singing this fractured gem today as I was driving him to Walmart. I cracked up. He was genuinely surprised to find that the song was not about the Beach Boys! I immediately thought of amiright!! - Submitted by: Stray Pooch
Gimme the peat moss and free my soul.
or
Gimme the peat bog and free my soul.
Gimme the beat, boys, and free my soul.
The Story: Since this song was popularized again by Uncle Kracker in the summer of 2003, a young man sang this song on a TV talent show televised in my area. He didn't annunciate his words clearly, and this is what he sounded like he said. - Submitted by: Sharon Krebs
Give me the Beach Boys to free my sword.
Give me the beat, boys, and free my soul.
The Story: My 6-year-old little sister heard this song playing on my car radio and insisted it was her favorite song. She started singing along loudly. It took me a few minutes to realize the words she was singing! People always get confused when she asks them to put on the song about 'The Beach Boys and their sword'! - Submitted by: Angel
Give me the Peace Corps to free my soul.
Give me the beat, boys, and free my soul.
The Story: This is how my wife and her sister have understood this line for years. I just heard her singing it the other day and when I corrected her, she didn't believe me. After a web search with about 5 zillion results all showing the right lyrics (including this site), she still didn't believe that she was wrong! - Submitted by: Mac
I wanna get lost in your wheelbarrow and drift away.
I wanna get lost in your rock-n-roll and drift away.
The Story: This was sung by a friend of ours with the misheard lyric. He really hears 'wheel barrow'. I thought he was just joking the first couple times I heard him sing it, but he wasn't. We now coined the phrase, 'He pulled a wheelbarrow' when anyone mis-sings a lyric to any song. - Submitted by: Kelly VanWormer
