Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Bob Marley & The Wailers

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Bob Marley & The Wailers', "Get Up Stand Up"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Donkey butterfly
The Real Lyrics:
Don't give up the fight
The Story: I was learning english then (I was about 13) and I really thought Bob Marley was trying to confront the strongness of a donkey with the fragility of a butterfly. Real poetry! Later I would understand that this song is much more powerful than any metaphor. - Submitted by: Pepe Colubi
Bob Marley & The Wailers', "Three Little Birds"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Three little birds defile my doorstep.
The Real Lyrics:
Three little birds pitch by my doorstep.
The Story: Seems Bob Marley had the same problem with pigeons as I do. - Submitted by: Philsister
Bob Marley & the Wailers', "I Shot The Sheriff"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I shat the sheriff.
The Real Lyrics:
I shot the sheriff.
The Story: I thought maybe it was about a cannibal with diarrhea, but that seems unusual for the reggae genre. - Submitted by: Johnny Hawk
The Misheard Lyrics:
One La, One La, Let's get together and be alright!
The Real Lyrics:
One Love! One Heart! Let's get together and feel all right.
The Story: We were traveling in a car to Nelson, BC while playing a tape of Bob Marley and the Wailers over and over. My girlfriend's daughter began singing these lyrics wholeheartedly from the back seat every time this song came out. It was so innocent, sincere and awesome! - Submitted by: Rudolf
