The Inappropriate Lyrics:
Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio ,etc.
Why They're Inappropriate:
Does anybody on this site do any of their own research? This song was originally entitled 'Mrs. Roosevelt' which very much explains the reference to the 1936s - 51 superstar baseball player Joe DiMaggio also know as 'Joltin' Joe' DiMaggio. (Also know as 'The Yankee Clipper') The song is a lement to the missing role models or 'heroes', if you please, of the post WWII era. In a round about way it was a protest song about the administration of the time and the policies involving the war and the home fronts. Before it was finished S&G were asked to do the soundtrack for 'The Graduate' and in a bit of a desperate move, Paul Simon revised the song to be 'Mrs. Robinson' to match the character in the movie. However, he left the lyrics more or less intact. This includes the 'doot da doo' and 'deet de dee' lines which were originally only place holders for lines that had yet to be written.
