Parody Written by:

The Lyrics

Another maritime tragedy, this time in the US from 1865...
SS Sultana
A paddlewheel steamboat
Went down in 1865
With 1800 folks
(no joke)

SS Sultana
Such a beauty
How she went down
That is a mystery

Sultana ran a regular route
Between St. Louis and New Orleans
She later carried many troops about
By War Department orders it seems

Now a boiler needed repaired while docked
In Vicksburg, Mississippi
Small patchwork repairs were made round the clock
But the quick fix would prove costly

Weighed 1719 tons, quite hefty
Crew numbered no more than 85
376 legal capacity
2000 soldiers muscled aboard or bribed

SS Sultana
Such a beauty
How she went down
That is a mystery

Sultana was crammed with human beings
Mostly former Union Soldiers
They caused the ship to list and careen
Which affected the three boilers

The steam pressure grew higher and higher
Until there was a violent explosion
Hot coals then spread an uncontrollable fire
As far as Memphis people had noticed

A few were flung far from the deck
Most died in the tragic superstructure fire
The ship was now a burning wreck
By dawn she sunk, but left 600 survivors

SS Sultana
Such a beauty
How she went down
That is a mystery

The death toll is a mess
Ranges from 1300-1800
Survivors also a guess
Possibly 600-800

SS Sultana tragedy
A bad boiler, overcrowding, sabotage mystery?
Lying in the Mississippi
Greatest maritime disaster in US history

SS Sultana
Such a beauty
How she went down
That is a mystery

Deathbed confession
Sabotage of the Confederacy
A coal torpedo placed
While docked in Mississippi

How wicked would that be?
How wicked would that be?

Those old steamboats were floating deathtraps in the best of times, and 1865 was certainly not the best of times. With modern engines and safety standards, that would be a great way to travel. But the rivers have been changed along with the vessels. Once more you have reminded us of a loss of life at a time when those men should have been celebrating the end of the war.

This is such a tragedy. Drown or burn? And I thought today's transit is bad ;(
